YEOVIL NEWS: Thousands visit Recreation Centre in June

JUNE was one of the busiest months ever for Yeovil Recreation Centre - with around 10,000 people visiting the Athletics Arena during the month alone.

There were only eight days in June when the Arena was not used for events or activities.

Recently, the Rec hosted the South West Schools Track and Field Championships and the Great British Tennis Weekend with the Galley Refreshments Kiosk enjoying its busiest day since the opening of the Flagship Play Area in 2009.

Schools and clubs travel far and wide to enjoy the first class facilities of the Athletics Area. Gillingham Primary Schools, Huish Olympic Trust, East Devon County Schools, Sedgemoor Schools, and Preston School, to name a few, all held successful events over a wide variety of athletics disciplines and competitions in one week during June.YEOVIL NEWS: Thousands visit Recreation Centre in June

During the three weekends of Great British Tennis Weekend, more than 300 people of all ages played the tennis for free on the Artificial Grass Pitch.

The Athletics Arena has even been home to one of the best long distance runners in the country with Olympian Jo Pavey training for the Commonwealth Games on the track.

Yeovil’s Athletics Arena is the only publically accessible eight lane athletics track in the county, a big plus for many groups, clubs or schools wanting to use the facilities and it is certainly one of the best facilities in the South West.

South Somerset District Council’s leisure and culture spokesman, Cllr Sylvia Seal, said: “The Rec has been very well used over recent months, mainly because of the high-class facilities available to group users in the athletics arena. Others are always welcome to use the athletics arena or other facilities on site.

“We have increased the presence of staff down at the site so that there is always someone there to help or answer enquiries when needed. Pick up the phone and enquire about the facilities available to you.”

To showcase the top quality facilities on offer there will be a first Family Fun Day at the Rec on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

There will be an opportunity to try out exciting activities including mini tennis, hockey, athletics, golf and even laser tag for free. There will also be inflatables and a barbecue to keep everyone occupied!
