SOMERSET NEWS: Woman in wheelchair trapped inside vehicle

A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital this afternoon (Sunday, July 20, 2014) following an accident in Somerset.

The alarm was raised at just before 4pm to the incident at Wheddon Cross on Exmoor where a vehicle had left the road and gone down a 45-degree embankment.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told the Yeovil Press: “The vehicle was on its roof with one person in a wheelchair trapped inside.”

Two fire engines from Minehead and further support from Taunton were mobilised to the incident and firefighters used winches to secure the vehicle before attempting to remove the casualty.

The spokesman added: “Fire crews worked alongside paramedics to rescue the female casualty with the use of a spinal board.

“The casualty was carried about 400 yards through woodland to the air ambulance.”
