YEOVIL NEWS: Don’t be fooled by bogus police officer phone call scam

A man in Yeovil was contacted on Sunday, June 15, 2014, by an Asian-sounding man claiming to be calling from Paddington Green police station in London.

He said that two men had been arrested trying to buy jewellery worth £7,500 on the victim’s bank account, and asked for his bank account details. Luckily the man did not believe the caller, refused to provide his details and hung up.

It is the same technique that has been used numerous times across Avon and Somerset and the West Country in the past two months.

The number of people who have been targeted in the West Country - covering Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall and Avon and Somerset police forces - has now topped 200, with 90 incidents in Devon and Cornwall alone.

Police believe that the amount of cash demanded by the fraudsters could top half a million pounds.

Anyone who has been contacted by suspected fraudsters should call police on 101 or Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre, on 0300 123 2040.
