SOMERSET NEWS: Young volunteers wanted for children’s reading challenge

THE Somerset Library Service is once again offering young people the chance to boost their CVs with a volunteering opportunity over the school summer holidays.

During July and August each year, over 7,000 children visit Somerset’s libraries to join in with the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children aged 4-11 to read six books during the long summer holidays.

The volunteers are needed to work with the library staff to help children improve their literacy skills while having fun.SOMERSET NEWS: Young volunteers wanted for children’s reading challenge

Volunteers could find themselves involved in any number of things from registering children, to helping to organise story and craft sessions.

As well as boosting their CVs, the young people will receive a T-shirt, as well as other goodies, and be invited to a volunteers’ celebration event at the end of the summer.

The offer is open to anyone aged between 13 and 25-years-old who has an interest in books and would like to be involved in encouraging children to get into reading.

Sue Crowley, of Somerset Library Service, said: “Somerset Library Service had its most successful year ever with the Summer Reading Creepy House Challenge in 2013, and we’re looking forward to working with our young people to help even more children discover the joy of reading.”
