SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: DIY frustration with national shortage of fence panels

DIY frustration with national shortage of fence panels

DO-IT-YOURSELF enthusiasts in South Somerset looking to make use of the good weather and replace those fence panels which were damaged or blown down in the winter are facing frustration this Easter.

The good weather and Easter holiday means that many of those outside DIY jobs can be done – but fence panel replacement may not be achievable.

DIY and hardware stores have seen demand for fence panels rise by five-fold as a result of log shortages, poor winter weather conditions and an increase in house-building.DIY frustration with national shortage of fence panels

One Yeovil-based property maintenance firm was delighted when it was given a number of jobs earlier this year to replace garden fence panels which had blown over in the winter storms – but was then left frustrated when told it would have to wait several weeks before the supplies needed became available.

“I couldn’t believe it when I was told there was a national shortage of fence panels,” said a company spokesman.

And only this week Dave Cross, of Yeovil, stormed on social networking Facebook: “Six-week wait for fence panels for the garden – you must be chuffin’ joking!”

A quick look around a couple of DIY outlets in Yeovil today (Good Friday, April 18, 2014) certainly confirmed the national picture that fence panels are few and far between at the moment.
