The Pope's in Yeovil! Holy Smoke!

The Pope's in Yeovil! Holy Smoke!

POPE Francis marked the first anniversary of his election as pontiff last Thursday (March 13, 2014) by spending the day on retreat to mark Lent – or did he?

Audiences at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil over the past week have been enjoying the hugely-popular musical Sister Act – performed by members of the Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society – where the Pope has been seen at the end of each show clapping and applauding the nuns and their colourful production. The Pope's in Yeovil! But surely it could not be Pope Francis himself?

Alas! We should point out that we don’t think the Pope audiences have been seeing at the Octagon is the actual Pope! It is a member of the Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society team, Roy Hollis, making a cameo performance as Pope Paul VI whose Pontificate spanned from 1963 to 1978 during the time Sister Act the musical was set.

But, hey, it’s probably not every year a Pope of any description visits the Octagon – let alone make an appearance in a production!
