Yeovil College inspired by the care of St Margaret's Hospice

BUSINESS students and staff at Yeovil College have raised £600 for St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice after being inspired by care received by their relatives.

The students were inspired by the stories of classmate Jake Bradley, whose grandmother received help from a hospice in Dorchester supported by nurses including those from St Margaret’s, and lecturer Lorraine Dash whose mother spent time at the St Margaret’s Hospice in Yeovil.Yeovil College inspired by the care of St Margaret's Hospice

Mrs Dash and her family pledged to double any money raised by the students – adding £300 to their total.

“My mum spent several weeks at St Margaret’s Hospice before she passed away and I got to see first-hand the absolutely amazing support she got from the staff,” said Mrs Dash.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, but once you’ve have that interaction with St Margaret’s Hospice, everything changes and you never look back.”

Mrs Dash added: “Each year the students pick a charity to support and when Jake and I told them the great work we’d seen at St Margaret’s they didn’t hesitate – they knew straight away that they wanted to help us say thank you.”

Jake, 18, of Sherborne, added: “Everyone thought that raising money for the hospice was a brilliant idea. They do a fantastic job.”

The students ran raffles and stalls – selling good that they had bought or made themselves including friendship bracelets, bags, cards, decorated glassware, key rings, cakes and sweets.

Hospice community fundraiser Gemma Wilkes said: “We are continually grateful for the support shown by the business studies staff and students at Yeovil College.”
