Vandalism on the decrease at Yeovil Country Park

VANDALISM and anti-social behaviour is on the decrease at the Yeovil Country Park – better known as Ninesprings – due to increased involvement between rangers and visitors.

Ninesprings has often been plagued by problems, especially during the summer months, with vandalism, litter and other forms of anti-social behaviour.Vandalism on the decrease at Yeovil Country Park

But a report from South Somerset District Council’s countryside ranger team has reported that things are looking better.

A spokesman said: “We experienced some irresponsible use of the site and vandalism over the summer months, although this year it was far better than in previous years.”

The rangers believe that is down to “better engagement” with site-users and the efforts of volunteer litter pickers clearing up over the weekends.

The spokesman added: “The Friends of Yeovil Country park funded the employment of a weekend ranger for the school August holidays to ensure that the park was clean and safe and to deliver free drop-in activity sessions.”

Getting children involved in the country park and appreciating the natural environment would appear to be key to educating them on their future use of the area.

The ranger team have held 14 public events in the park over the year which involved nearly 6,250 children and 1,550 adults.

A report about the Yeovil Country Park will go before members of Yeovil Town Council’s grounds and general maintenance committee tonight (Monday, November 11, 2013).
