Yeovil group is longest running in the country

THE Yeovil branch of the University of the Third Age organisation is celebrating its 30th anniversary tomorrow (Friday, October 11) at the Unity Hall - better known as the Labour Club - in Yeovil.

The special guest for the occasion is Barbara Lewis, chairman of The Third Age Trust – the charitable umbrella organisation for all U3As - who will be there from 10am.

Yeovil already had a group called Yeovil Shared Interest Scheme, when the U3A arrived in the country in the early 80s. They were the second group to affiliate to the organisation, just behind Cambridge, who later withdrew and now Yeovil holds the title of the longest standing group.

The current chairman, Chris Rusling, will be welcoming local dignitaries and those who have been of special help to the group over the years.

The U3A is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full-time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.
