THE Piers Simon Appeal and its School in a Bag initiative found itself £4,000 better off - thanks to the annual Somerset Chamber of Commerce annual charity golf day.

Despite the rain and fog, 56 golfers from businesses across Somerset tee’d off in support of the charity which was set up following the death of Chilthorne Domer man Piers Simon in the Asian Tsunami of 2004.

Now in its seventh year, the popular event took place at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club followed by a two-course dinner in the evening. The four members of the winning team from M&J Bowers each won a £50 pro shop voucher and were presented with a special trophy to mark their success.Somerset Chamber golfers support the Piers Simon Appeal

Luke Simon, charity liaison officer for School in a Bag, said: “Despite the weather, the day was great fun and the spirit of all the players in the clubhouse afterwards was very upbeat.

"The event has raised an amazing £3,823, which is enough to fund 254 SchoolBags for poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster affected children around the world. Our heartfelt thanks go to the Somerset Chamber and all of those who got involved for making the event such a huge success.”

The Piers Simon Appeal helps with relief efforts at disaster-hit areas around the globe, while its spin-off School in a Bag project provides rucksacks full of stationery and resources to poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster affected children around the world.

Somerset Chamber events manager Sue Higgins said: “It was a pleasure to work with such a fantastic charity for this year’s Chamber Golf Day.

"It is the first year in the event’s history that we had secured so much sponsorship and support from local companies, and this is in true recognition of what inspiring work the School in a Bag charity does for the world’s most vulnerable children. I would like to thank all the golfers who braved the rain and fog and to all our sponsors who collectively raised nearly £4,000 for the charity.”

The Somerset Chamber of Commerce is one of only five accredited Chambers in the South West and 53 in the whole of the UK.

It works closely with the British Chambers of Commerce to make sure Somerset businesses stay well connected at both a local and national level, and that the voices of the Somerset business community are heard at all levels of government.
