Woman has handbag snatched in Yeovil town centre

A WOMAN who was sat on a bench in Yeovil town centre had her handbag snatched from her during the lunchtime.

The incident happened sometime between 12.30pm and 12.45pm on Thursday, October 4, when the woman was set opposite Hendford Lodge in Hendford, close to the entrance to the underground car park at Tesco.

She placed her handbag on the bench next to her and within seconds a man snatched it and ran off in the direction of Natwest bank. He then dropped the bag and ran into the high street.

Two men who were sat on a bench near the victim chased the man. They then returned the victim's purse minus the money in it.

PC Holloway, who is leading this investigation, said: "Both I and the victim would like to thank the two young men who chased this individual.

"This was an opportunist theft and I would urge anyone who saw what happened to come forward and contact us."

Officers are now keen to trace a man described as white, aged between 20 and 30 years old, of a slight build and between 5ft 7inches tall and 5ft 8inches tall. He had a brown and cream three quarter length hooded top that almost looked to big for him.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting crime reference 108663/12. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
