Police warn people to be on their guard from doorstep callers

POLICE are reminding people in the South Somerset area to be wary of unannounced callers after three reported incidents of distraction burglary in the area within the last few weeks.

Typically an unknown caller has kept the victim occupied with made-up stories while another offender has snuck in via an unlocked back door and stolen cash or jewellery.

Crime reduction officer Beth Poole said “Distraction callers use stories that are often very convincing and persuasive.

''They may be men, women or even children, pose as officials using props or panic you with an alarming tale that appeals to your conscience.

''Whether you’re at home or away, always lock your front and back doors, practice the doorstep code and if you have any doubts about a caller’s identity, keep them out!”

The doorstep code recommends that residents STOP to think if anyone is expected and to double-check that back doors and rear windows are locked; apply the door CHAIN before opening the door; and to ask for and carefully CHECK the caller’s identification.

If you have any doubts, invite the caller to make an appointment to call back later when you can have someone with you.  Don’t worry about appearing rude or unfriendly, genuine callers will understand.

If you think you have been visited by a bogus caller, report it to the police immediately on 999.  For more information about doorstep safety, visit the police website at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk
