Custody visitors wanted at Yeovil Police Station

FANCY a closer look inside a police cell? Then why not become an Independent Custody Visitor with Avon and Somerset Police Authority?

There currently are vacancies in Yeovil. Custody visitors are people from the local community who observe, comment and report on the condition of police custody cells and how the people detained are looked after.

As a custody visitor, you will work in pairs and are expected to call unannounced at Yeovil police station and you will check on the welfare of the detained person and on the conditions of their detention.

Custody Visiting Coordinator Lorna Muffett said: “Entering a custody suite for the first time can be a very daunting experience for anyone. We want to ensure that those in custody are being treated fairly and are in suitable accommodation.

“This is a voluntary role and these people are independent of the police and the detainees.”

People of all ethnicities, faiths, sexualities, disabilities and social background are all welcome to apply and full training will be given.

Applicants need to be over 18 and live or work in the Avon and Somerset area. Volunteers will receive expenses for carrying out their role.
