Elderly woman duped by conman

YEOVIL police are asking for help to trace a man who talked his way into an 84-year-old woman's home and stole her handbag.

It happened at around 5pm on Saturday, September 22, in Ilchester Road. The woman saw a man in her garden and opened her back door to ask what he was doing there.

He said he was being chased and had jumped into her garden to escape. She let him walk through her house from the back to the front door, and later found that her handbag had been stolen from the kitchen.

The man, who was last seen walking along Ilchester Road in the direction of the Pickety Witch pub, is described as white, 5ft 4ins tall, in his late teens, of athletic build with short mousy-coloured straight hair combed back. He was wearing brown trousers and a light-coloured top.

Anyone who recognizes the description or who saw the man is asked to contact Yeovil police on 101 or http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact/crime_reporting/

Officers are repeating their advice to people, particularly the elderly, not to open their doors to uninvited callers or to allow strangers into their home. Call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org
